About the Chandigarh to Amritsar route

Amritsar is roughly 230 km from Chandigarh, normally four and a half to five and a half hours by road. The usual route runs through Kharar and Ludhiana on NH-44, then turns towards Jalandhar and on to Amritsar.

Most enquiries on this route are pilgrimage or family visits built around the Golden Temple, and a large share also want the Wagah border retreat ceremony. Those two have very different timings, which is what shapes the day: the temple is open through the day, while the ceremony is in the late afternoon and needs you to leave Amritsar with time to spare.

A one-day round trip from Chandigarh is possible but long. Many families prefer an overnight stay in Amritsar and a return the next day, which we quote as a two-day round trip with the vehicle staying with you.

Good to know before you travel

  • The Wagah retreat ceremony happens in the late afternoon and timings shift with the season. Leaving Amritsar well before the ceremony is the practical part of planning this trip.
  • Parking near the Golden Temple is busy, particularly on weekends and around festivals. Drivers usually drop close to the entrance and wait at a designated parking area.
  • Winter fog on the Ludhiana–Jalandhar stretch can slow early-morning departures considerably. In December and January we suggest a later start rather than a pre-dawn one.
  • If you want to add Anandpur Sahib or Tarn Taran to the itinerary, tell us at the enquiry stage so the extra running is in the quote.
