About the Chandigarh to Manali route

Manali is about 310 km from Chandigarh and the drive normally takes eight to nine and a half hours with breaks. The road runs through Kharar, Kiratpur Sahib, Bilaspur, Sundernagar and Mandi, then follows the Beas through the Aut tunnel into the Kullu valley.

The Kiratpur to Nerchowk four-lane with its tunnels has taken a large bite out of the old travel time, so the slower section is now Mandi to Kullu, which is a river-side road that narrows in places. This is a long day behind the wheel, which is why a rested driver and a comfortable vehicle matter more on this route than on any other from Tricity.

Many travellers pick a late-night departure from Chandigarh, around 10 or 11 PM, and reach Manali by morning. Others prefer an early-morning start to drive the valley in daylight. We will tell you which suits your plans when you share your dates.

Good to know before you travel

  • During the monsoon the Mandi–Kullu stretch is the one to watch, as landslides and slow-moving traffic can add hours. We check conditions with drivers on the route before departure.
  • Atal Tunnel to Sissu does not need a Rohtang permit, but the Rohtang Pass road itself does, and permits are limited. If you want either, tell us in advance so the driver can plan it.
  • Solang Valley and Sissu are common day trips from Manali and are quoted as additional running, not as part of the arrival journey.
  • In winter the road beyond Manali may be closed or restricted to certain vehicles. Snow chains and road status are checked before any Gulaba or Solang plan.
