About the Chandigarh to Kufri route

Kufri sits about 15 km beyond Shimla on NH-5, roughly 130 km from Tricity in total. The drive follows the Shimla road through Kalka, Solan and Kandaghat, then continues past Shimla town towards Theog.

Almost nobody books Kufri on its own. It is normally the second half of a Shimla trip, or a day where you leave Tricity early, spend the middle of the day at Kufri and Mahasu Peak, and come back down through Shimla in the evening.

It is best known as the closest place to Tricity where you are likely to find snow in winter, which is exactly why it fills up between December and February and on every long weekend.

Good to know before you travel

  • Vehicles are not allowed all the way up to Mahasu Peak. Cabs park below and the last stretch is covered on foot, on horseback or by the local vehicles that operate there.
  • In heavy snow the road beyond Shimla can be restricted or closed at short notice, and chains may be required. We will tell you what the road is doing rather than set out and turn back.
  • Weekends and the winter holidays are genuinely crowded, and the Shimla bypass can add an hour in each direction. An early start makes a real difference.
  • Most people pair Kufri with Shimla, and often with the Green Valley viewpoint on the way. Tell us the stops you want and they go into the itinerary.
