About the Chandigarh to Palampur route

Palampur is about 255 km from Tricity, usually six to seven hours by road. The common route runs through Ropar, Una and Hamirpur into the Kangra valley, with the last stretch through Baijnath.

It sits among working tea gardens with the Dhauladhar range directly behind it, which is what most people come for. The town itself is small and the interesting parts are spread through the surrounding valley rather than concentrated on one street.

Because it is about 35 km from Dharamshala, Palampur is often booked as part of a Kangra valley trip rather than on its own, with Bir Billing, Baijnath and Andretta added depending on how many days you have.

Good to know before you travel

• A same-day return is possible but long, at twelve hours or more of driving. Most people book at least one night, or combine it with Dharamshala over two or three days.
• Bir Billing, about 30 km away, is the usual addition for paragliding. Flying depends entirely on the weather and the operators there, which is outside our control.
• Baijnath temple is roughly 16 km before Palampur on the same road, so it costs almost nothing to add as a stop.
• The valley roads are narrow in places once you leave the main highway. An SUV is more comfortable for a group, though a sedan handles the route without difficulty.
